3 - 2 - 1 Summary

3 Things I learned:

  1. The different ways an empire could control a colony such as Sphere of Influence.
  2. The different advances in medicine and science.
  3. The term Raj referred to British rule over India from 1757 to 1947.
2 Things that interested me:
  1. The amount of African territory that was controlled by foreign countries.
  2. That Ethiopia was was able to remain independent.
1 Question I still have:
  1. How long did it normally take for a foreign country to take control of a nation in Africa?

Gandhi Quote

"A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes." - Gandhi

I believe this quote means that you can become anything you dream of because if you put your mind to it anything is possible as long as you try your hardest and never give up. I believe this is a very good quote and that more people should learn it and become more productive with their lives instead of wasting it.

Suez Canal

The Suez Canal is an important waterway in the world today. It is currently controlled by the Suez Canal Authority of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Roughly 20,000 ships use the Suez Canal every year. The Suez Canal is very important today because if the Canal didn't exist ships would have to sail around Africa which would increase the price on goods shipped from the parts of Asia and Africa such as oil.

Sepoy Rebellion

As the economic problems in India increased for the Indians their feeling of resentment towards the British and their feelings of nationalism also increased. In 1857 there was gossip being spread saying that the cartridges of their Enfield rifles were sealed using pork fat and beef. Since the only way to use the cartridges was to bite of the seal Hindus and Muslims were outraged by the news. The outbreak has been called the Sepoy Mutiny. Fierce fighting took place all over north India. It took the East India Company over a year to regain control over the country. Due to the week leadership and serious disagreements between Muslims and Hindus they were unable to unite against the British. The disagreements between the Hindus and Muslims ended up in the Hindus joining with the British because they preferred their rule compared to the rule of Muslims. The Sikhs became the mainstay of the British army in India. As a result of the mutiny the British government took direct control of India.  This was called the Raj or the area controlled by the British. India was split into 11 provinces and some 250 districts. The British also respected all treaties made by the East India Company.

Economic Imperialsim

Economic Imperialism is when an independent but less developed nation is controlled by a private business interests rather than by other governments. Economic Imperialism lets the nation maintain its own government but it can only trade with which ever business controls it. An example of this would be when the Dole Fruit company controlled the pineapple trade in Hawaii.

Imperialism Pro and Cons

Imperialism had its pros and cons. When European Countries colonized parts of Africa they brought with them modern technology to a place that didn't have it and they also introduced industrialization into these smaller nations which helped boost the economy. To be able to better transports goods the Europeans also introduced railroads into Africa. This made travel faster and easier which lowered the price of goods and helping the economy. Along with bringing in modern technology European Countries brought in widespread genocide because the African nations resisted the expansions into their territory. These nations also lost their native beliefs and were forced to abide by the rules and religion of the Europeans that controlled them. Many Africans were also sold into slavery and were stripped of their rights.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Charles Darwin was an English biologist. In 1859, Darwin published a book called The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. This book had all of his thinking in it which went against the widely accepted answer of how we explain the tremendous variety of plants and animals that we find on earth. The common answer to the question was that every species of plants and animals were created by God at the beginning of the world and has been here since.  This theory of change through natural selection came to be called the theory of evolution. While Darwin's ideas caused an excitement among scientists it also roused a storm of debate outside the scientific community. Many believed it contradicted the Bible. Ever since Darwin came up with the theory of evolution there has been great controversy over it and to this day teachers are unable to teach it in public schools.

Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope

Edison's Kinetoscope was used to record and project objects in motion. In October of 1888 he filed a caveat with the Patents Office. In this caveat Edison described the Kinetoscope as a device which would "do for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear". Edison used the Greek words "kineto" meaning "movement" and "scopos" meaning "to watch" to name it the Kinetoscope. One major problem of the Kinetoscope was that good film was not available for it. In 1893 a man by the name of Eastman Kodak began supplying film that made it possible for for Edison to up production of newer and better motion pictures. With the Kinetoscope Edison was able to make motion pictures which the common person could come see. Today movies are a big form of entertainment.

Introduction

Chapter 10 was about advancements in science and technology. This includes the light bulb and the telephone. Chapter 11 was about Imperialism in Africa and the revolts that took place. The two countries that controlled the most land in Africa were England and France. I hope to learn all about Imperialism in Africa and the revolts that took place because of Imperialism and their outcome.
